Welcome to the Maple Ridge Teachers’ Association (MRTA), representing Teachers of Public Schools in the communities of Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows, in School District #42.
Our schools are found on the traditional and unceded territories of the Kwantlen First Nation and Katzie First Nation. From the Pitt River in the West, along the banks of the Fraser River to Hayward Lake in the East, our communities dot the lands, hemmed up against the Pitt Polder Marshlands, Golden Ears and Blue Mountain to the North.
The MRTA is an affiliated local of the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation (BCTF). We work to represent teachers both with our Employer, within structures of the BCTF, and government bodies. Our full-time table officers are:

Hello & Welcome to the MRTA! I am pleased to be serving the teachers of Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows in my third year as MRTA President. I’ve been most fortunate in my MRTA involvement, serving in multiple roles (Acting 2nd VP, Local Rep to BCTF, AGM Delegate, various committees, and Staff Rep), during the past twelve years. I invite you to become familiar with the resources we have on our website, intended to assist you in finding the answers you are looking for. One question many teachers have is “how and when should I contact the union?” When I was new to the profession, I often asked myself the same question. If you have a concern or a question, I encourage you to please contact the union. Often, the quickest and most efficient way to connect is through your school-based MRTA staff rep; they usually have the ability to answer your question immediately. In some cases, the staff rep may choose to contact us on your behalf. There also may be issues or circumstances that are private and/or urgent, and you are always welcome to contact us directly. Staff reps are an excellent resource; they are responsible and proud in the service they offer to all teachers in your school. MRTA staff reps & table officers (Martin and I) are always happy to make time to talk and help because your questions or concerns are important to us. If you are concerned about how the questions or concerns you share will be used, please be aware that you will retain control of the information you share, and we will seek your direction before we share or act on what we discuss. I will always try to do that for you, wherever and whenever possible. I worry that sometimes I may miss member questions but please know that if you don’t hear back, it’s likely an oversight rather than intentional. If you have contacted us, and have not received an answer, or the answer is delayed, please make sure to follow up with us. |

MRTA 1st VP BSc/BEd Welcome to the MRTA! This is my third year, as a full-released officer of the MRTA. I’ve started the job after 13 years of teaching in School District 42. During those years, I have taught Secondary Math, Science, Foods Studies, and other courses. While teaching, I’ve also represented fellow teachers within my schools, and at the MRTA Executive Council level. Now that I’m in the office working with Trevor, our President, we’ve divided-up our responsibilities. If at any time a local teacher has a concern related to any of the following topics, they should feel free to direct communications my way: • Health & Safety • Job Postings • Leaves of Absence • Working & Learning Conditions • Social Justice • MRTA Communications • Professional Development Even if your question or concern doesn’t fit within this framework feel free to contact me any time, whether you are a local teacher, a part of our broader school communities, or general member of the public. martin@mrtaoffice.ca |
